About the Postcode Radius Finder
The Postcode Radius Finder lets you search for all UK postcodes, towns and cities within a chosen distance from any starting postcode. Whether you're a local business looking to define your service area, a recruiter searching for candidates within commuting distance, or a researcher analysing regional data, this tool provides comprehensive radius-based results.
How It Works
Enter any valid UK postcode and select a radius between 1 and 50 miles. The tool uses the Haversine formula to calculate the straight-line (as the crow flies) distance between your starting postcode and every other postcode in our database of over 1.8 million active UK postcodes. Results are grouped into nearby towns and cities (by local authority district) and postcode districts, sorted by distance from your origin.
Understanding the Results
The results are split into two main sections. The "Nearby Towns & Cities" table shows every local authority district that has at least one postcode within your chosen radius, along with the county and the distance to the nearest postcode in that district. The "Postcode Districts" section shows every postcode district (such as M25, BL1, or OL8) found within the radius, with a link through to detailed information for each district.
Common Uses for Radius Searching
Local Business Service Areas
Tradespeople, delivery companies and service businesses often need to define the area they cover. Searching a 10 or 20 mile radius from your base postcode gives you a clear list of postcode districts and towns you can reference on your website or in advertising materials. This is particularly useful for local SEO, where listing the specific areas you serve helps search engines understand your coverage.
Property Searches
When looking for a new home, it helps to understand what towns and areas fall within a reasonable distance of your workplace or a specific location. A radius search shows you all the nearby options you might not have considered, including smaller towns and villages that sit within commuting distance.
Recruitment & Commuting
Employers can use a radius search to understand the catchment area for potential employees. Searching 10 to 30 miles from your office postcode shows which towns and cities your staff might reasonably commute from, helping you target job advertising more effectively.
Market Research & Analysis
Researchers and analysts often need to define geographic areas around a point of interest. The postcode radius finder provides a structured dataset of all postcodes, districts and local authorities within your chosen distance, making it easy to scope regional analysis or plan surveys.
Distance Calculation
Distances are calculated as straight-line measurements (as the crow flies) using the Haversine formula, which accounts for the curvature of the Earth. Actual travel distances by road will typically be 20-40% longer than the straight-line distance shown, depending on the road network and geography of the area.
For example, a postcode shown as 5 miles away might be 6-7 miles by road. Keep this in mind when using the results for journey planning or defining delivery areas, and consider selecting a slightly larger radius than your actual travel limit.
UK Postcode System
UK postcodes follow a structured format divided into two parts: the outward code (before the space) identifies the postcode district, and the inward code (after the space) narrows down to a specific group of addresses. For example, in M25 0AA, "M25" is the postcode district and "0AA" is the sector and unit. The radius finder searches against all active postcodes and groups results by their district code, giving you a clear picture of which postcode areas overlap with your search radius.
