About this tool

This tool returns the elevation of any UK postcode in metres and feet above sea level, with a percentile rank calculated against all 1.79 million postcodes in our database. The elevation is sampled from the Open-Meteo global elevation dataset at each postcode's central coordinate.

How the ranking works

"Rank 1" is the highest postcode in the UK. If your postcode is at the 92nd percentile, it means it sits higher than 92% of all UK postcodes. This is a useful way to contextualise what "high" means in Britain — most of the country sits below 100 m, so even modest-sounding elevations can place you well above the national median.

How accurate is it?

The elevation is sampled at the postcode's centroid (a single lat/lng that represents the centre of the postcode's delivery area). Within a single postcode, which typically covers around 15 addresses, elevation can vary by a few metres if the road runs up a slope. For most uses (curiosity, house-hunting, climate context) this level of precision is more than enough.

What can I do with this?

Compare two or more postcodes with the elevation comparison tool, check whether your postcode is threatened by sea level rise scenarios with the sea level rise checker, or browse the league tables to see the highest and lowest postcodes in each county.
